Throughout art history, artists have used windows in paintings as a metaphor for interior and exterior point of views. In Blue Windows, a simple motive and a repeating harmonic structure give several soloists the opportunity to add their distinctive points of view. I like to work with intervallic development, and in this chart, I explore motives and melodies built on the intervals of 3rds and 4ths. Duelity was commissioned by Vince DiMartino and Miles Osland for the University of Kentucky Jazz Ensemble and premiered at the 2018 Midwest Band Clinic. A Curve in the Road is a tour de force for jazz ensemble and works well as a centerpiece chart or a finale to show off your band. An initial four note motive is developed and spins out along many ‘curves in the road’ as it speeds to a rousing finale. While on a vacation, I visited a Native American settlement and came upon a clearing called “gathering circle” where villagers would come together to discuss issues affecting the village. It seemed like a good title for a piece that reflects on coming together as a community. The chart begins with the horn call signaling the villagers to assemble and evolves as they gradually walk to the “circle” and interact toward a resolution. Solos feature soprano sax, guitar (trumpet can be a substitute), and drums.

Inner Voices is a meditation on inner thoughts and emotions in an advanced harmonic, Kenny Wheeler-style tune featuring trumpet and tenor saxophone soloists on the melody. Each have a solo section with the tenor solo moving into a double-time samba before the band has a final shout chorus.

One of my favorite groups as a young trombonist was the Jazz Crusaders. I wrote Uncommonly Ground with that signature sound of trombone and tenor sax in mind. The chart begins with a contemporary latin type groove but then transitions and moves into a 6/4 groove in the bridge hence the word ‘uncommonly’. This chart will feature your tenor sax and guitar soloists. The chart builds to a rousing end with your tenor soloist leading the way.
